Machattie Park was formally opened in December 1890. Bathurst is well served by the availability of many formal and informal parks such as the above and the Macquarie River Bicentenial Park which lies adjacent to the Macquarie River at the lower end of William St. This park affords a tranquil and scenic area to residents and visitors and incorporates the peace garden, Pioneers wall and the Ohkuma Japanese Garden. Bathurst's sporting facilities are highly regarded. Carrington Park, a multi-purpose football ground, is recognised as the best facility west of the Blue Mountains and is eagerly sought after as a venue for local, State, national and international events. Adjacent to Carrington Park is the Bathurst Sportsground and ALan Morse Park, Which are used extensively for both summer and winter sports. Bathurst boasts a hockey complex, which rivals the best in country NSW. A new water-based synthetic pitch is to be constructed during 2000, which will compliment the existing two sand based synthetic pitches and the numerous grass hockey fields. The Cooke Hockey Complex is always in demand for high profile state and regional hockey championships. Other sporting facilities include grounds for croquet, all codes of football, netball, hockey, cricket, basketball and bowls. When in Bathurst join in a social activity or throw yourself into one of the local sporting competitions. |
